July is one of the most saintly months when it comes to honouring the memory of the Catholic saints. Every day of the month has a number of catholic saints, whom we should remember and praise. Surely, compared to other months in the calendar, the July Catholic Saints are the most. Let’s try to tell something more about the most notable of them, without underestimating the holy deeds of any of the saints.
On July 3the Catholic Church honours the memory of St. Thomas, one of the 12 apostles. St. Thomas is considered the patron of all architects. What is important to know about St. Thomas is that he was chosen by Jesus Christ to spread the gospel after His resurrection. Why? Because St. Thomas, also known as Doubting Thomas, was not there when Christ resurrected and asked to touch His wounds before he believed. Although all of the Apostles except St. John abandoned Jesus and doubted Him, St. Thomas actually pronounced the doubtful words. It’s good to know that one of the July Catholic Saints really knew Jesus Christ and was His disciple for three years.
One of the most important Christian women and surely the second most-important in the Bible – St. Mary Magdalene, was one of the truest followers of Jesus Christ, travelling with him and witnessing two of the most important events in His life – the crucifixion and the resurrection. St. Mary Magdalene is mentioned 12 times in the Bible – more than some of the Apostles, which shows us that she was very close to Jesus Christ and, surely, was a notable Christian. She is a patron of the apothecaries, the pharmacists, the hairdressers, the women in general and many other groups.
On July 26 we remember St Joachim and Anne, who can be referred to as the grandparents of Jesus Christ, as they were parents the Virgin Mary. Although they are not mentioned in the Bible, Saints Joachim and Anne are highly respected and surely deserve to be part of the group of the July Catholic Saints. They are patrons of the grandparents, as well as of some craftsmen and cities. The legends suggest that both Saint Joachim and Saint Anne descended from David. The former was born in Nazareth, the latter – in Bethlehem. The Christian sources describe Saint Joachim as a wealthy, but pious person, who was always glad to help and gave money to the poor, as well as to the Christian temple.
The memory of Saint Ignatius of Loyola is honoured on July 31. This remarkable Christian began his life as a soldier, but later devoted his life to religion. He is said to have experienced visions shortly after studying the Bible and the lives of the Catholic Saints. He travelled and studied in different countries and wrote his work titled ‘Spiritual Exercises’. He graduated from university in Paris and attracted other humble and devoted Christians with whom he founded the famous order of the Jesuits. 38 members of this order were canonized and other 38 were declared to be Blessed.
All in all, all of the July Catholic Saints are notable for something they did. Although we should not classify them and tell that some are more popular than others, we hope that you liked to get acquainted with four of them and to find out something more about them and their life. Don’t forget to check regularly your calendar and to wish your friends with the same name as the saints to be protected by their patron, always to believe in God and to follow their dreams.
