Catholic Saints – Similar To Gods?

Filed under: Catholic Saints - 13 Feb 2012  | Spread the word !

[Facebook] [Twitter]

Catholicism is one of the most important religions of the world. This religion sees God as one and only, being so monotheistic. Opposed to this, most antique cultures were polytheistic. In the middle of an era where belief in God seems to be not so important anymore, catholic saints are often compared to Gods. Greeks and Romans, for example, had gods who they invoked when they had all kind of needs. These gods received sacrifices and offerings, all in the name of religion. Nowadays, catholic saints also have each their own “job” in helping catholics to solve all their problems. Anthony de Padua is one of the catholic saints who has a certain job – he is the patron of the pregnant women. So, pregnant women who might fear they could lose their babies do not make sacrifices, but light candles. The similarity of catholic saints with gods is important.

As humankind evolved, the religion also evolved. Even so, similarities are easy to find between Christianity and paganism. Although people from the antiquity are called pagans, their rituals are almost repeated by Christians. The catholic saints are sort of an update of the Roman and Greek gods. Archbishop of Salvador, Oscar Romero, who died in 1980 had its beatification only a few years later and now is considered the patron of the Americas and San Salvador. He is one of the new catholic saints. People pray to him and he is popularly called San Romero by catholics.

Saint Raymond of Penyafort is one of the catholic saints who is considered a patron of canonists, as he was the one who made the rules of beatification of catholics to transform them into catholic saints, whom people may pray to. In Mexico Santa Muerte – Saint Death is a figure similar to Greek god Hades and Norse goddess Freyja, both representatives of death in these cultures. So, how could people not compare catholic saints with gods? As every little process and being on Earth is evolving, so is religion, this is why comparing catholic saints to gods is realistic and a part of the know-how every person should have.

Patron Catholic Saints

Patron Catholic saints are those who are associated with a certain element or happening in every person’s life. They are named patrons due to the fact that they govern over the particular thing they are related to, helping people from that category to succeed. In this respect, Catholic saints are connected to an occupation, a field of activity, a church, a country, a cause and so on. They are used in order to formulate the idea of someone watching over people and being concerned with only this particular aspect of life.

The most frequent usage for Catholic saints as patrons is in the case of churches. This is due to the fact that each religious establishment must be conducted and looked over by a particular saint. Naturally, there are numerous churches that have the same patron, all over the world. The patron Catholic saints are chosen mostly according to the values and traditions of the community or if the place has had a connection with a certain saint. Catholic countries may also have patron Catholic saints, which are said to govern over the entire nation and to represent them. In later years, more and more Catholic saints names have been associated with illnesses and causes. These connections are usually made after a thorough research. This is because the life of the said saint must have had something to do with the element he is now related to. For example, the patron saint of the ecologist movements and causes is Francis of Assisi, who was said to have loved and cared deeply for nature and the environment. In addition to these uses, another fixture of the Catholic saints is their affiliation to a work field. For example, the journalists and writers are under the patronage of Francis de Sales, who was a writer.

Patron Catholic saints are very important to this religious community as they are associated with many aspects of the daily life. Religion passes from the church onto all the other elements and activities in life, making it easy for people to feel protected and safe at all times.

Saint Patrick

Filed under: Catholic Saints - 25 Aug 2011  | Spread the word !

[Facebook] [Twitter]

Saint Patrick is honored by the Roman Catholic Church on the 17th of March and He is considered the patron of Ireland. Saint Patrick’s Day is one of the most important holidays for the Catholic people, being celebrated all around the world.

Patrick was born in the 4th century in Roman Britain, also known as Britannia, a part of Great Britain as we know today which was controlled in that time by the Roman Empire. He was born in a religious family: his father was a deacon and his grandfather a priest. The legend says that Patrick was only four years old when his family was captured and taken to Ireland, which was then considered a profane country.

There Patrick became a slave at a farm, so He devoted Himself to religion. He remained captive in Ireland until the age of 20, when He had a dream in which God tells him to leave Ireland by sea. Patrick was determined to listen to the advice that God gave Him, but He had another revelation. This time, the Irish people appear in the dream, asking Him not to leave them, but to save them from the barbarians.

Thus, Patrick starts preaching the Irish people and manages, supported by his followers, to convert to Christianity thousands of Irishmen. He spends the next 40 years building churches throughout the country, and soon Ireland was a Christian country.

The Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated by the Irish people with a lot of enthusiasm. The traditional icon of this national holiday is the clover, which symbolizes the way in which Saint Patrick explained to the people the concept of the Holy Trinity.

The Saint Patrick’s Day festival usually lasts for three days, during which the Irish drink a lot of beer, eat plum-pies and send messages and postcards to their friends and family. The streets of Dublin host one of the most spectacular parades, which soon became famous and people from all over the world are visiting Ireland during Saint Patrick’s Day Festival, to witness the celebration of Ireland’s patron.
